About the Han Entzinger Thesis Award
The Han Entzinger Award is a prestigious annual prize that recognizes excellence in migration-related diversity research at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Named after the distinguished Professor Han Entzinger, the award celebrates outstanding Master’s theses that contribute to our understanding of migration and diversity in contemporary society.
The award is judged by an interdisciplinary jury of experts from across EUR’s faculties. This year’s jury was chaired by Prof. Dr Han Entzinger and included Dr Warda Belabas (ESSB), Prof. Dr Jacco van Sterkenburg (ESHCC), Dr Maria Avraamidou (ESHCC), Dr Mieke Kox (ESL), Jill Stigter, PhD (ESL), Dr Sonja Fransen (ISS), and Dr Zeynep Kaşlı (ISS).
About the Award-Winning Research
Leaving the South: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Roy Stryker's Historical Section Representation of Internal Migration offers a critical examination of Roy Stryker's Historical Section photography project (1935-1943), which documented American reality during the Great Depression era, with a particular focus on domestic migration. Through thorough visual discourse analysis, the thesis explores the project’s truth claims, distribution methods, and representation practices, while examining dominant public narratives and potential omissions in representation. The jury was particularly impressed by the sophisticated critical analysis of visual discourse in relation to internal migration documentation.
We are pleased to note that Chiel Rozendaal joined the History Department’s teaching team in September 2024.
