Description
In 2005, Palestinian civil society organizations initiated the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, advocating for the boycott of Israeli academic and cultural institutions involved in the occupation and oppression of Palestinians. This event aims to delve into the complexities of the BDS movement, its effectiveness as a tool for social justice, and comparisons with past boycott movements such as the Anti-Apartheid Movement in South Africa.
With a lecture by Omar Barghouti (Co-founder of the BDS movement, PhD candidate University of Amsterdam), followed by a discussion with Pepijn Brandon (Professor Global Economic and Social History Vrije Universiteit, researcher IISG) and Gloria Wekker (Emeritus Professor Gender and Ethnicity Utrecht University and writer). Jeff Handmaker (Associate professor International Institute of Social Studies) will moderate.
