Description
International attempts to reform the humanitarian system are ongoing and come from different fields. While progress is being made, there is still discussion on how to shift the power, localise humanitarian actions and reconfigure hierarchies, given that the very structure of the humanitarian system seems reluctant to change. In this context, emergent contributions of women, feminist activists and scholars seek to reconfigure the current humanitarian system by addressing and transforming gender and power relations, while at the same time centring the experiences and voices of marginalised populations. However, dominant forms of humanitarian action see feminisms as a “too” political endeavour and hence, remain sceptical about engaging with feminist approaches as those could compromise their humanitarian ethos. At the same time, feminisms still face prejudice, stigma, and patriarchal backlash in different contexts around the world. Drawing from the experiences and practices of humanitarian actors, feminists, and women-led collectives in Colombia, I interrogate whether feminisms could enhance a more dignified, relational, and people-led humanitarian action.Period | 13 Sept 2024 |
