Fostering Collaborative Welfare Initiatives: Teaching Artists’ Experiences in Targeted Community Projects

This working paper aims to shed light on the complex landscape of teaching artists’ work in local communities, emphasizing the opportunities and obstacles they face. This research employs a comparative case study approach primarily utilizing content analysis and focus group discussions, with semi-structured interviews serving as supplementary data sources. The cases selected for this study include a diverse range of community-based arts programs that engage artists in various community contexts: 1) rural communities with emerging initiatives, 2) rural communities with established art programs, 3) urban communities with emerging initiatives, and 4) urban communities with established art programs. This study seeks to inform the development of supportive policies and economic strategies that can enhance the role of teaching artists as agents of social change. The insights from this study will be valuable for policymakers and other stakeholders dedicated to leveraging the transformative power of the arts in local communities.
