Description
My paper focuses on how the living relate to the dead through monuments and its impact on current monument wars, an issue that is often overlooked or at best implicitly acknowledged in debates. After discussing some theoretical views and notions on the relationship between the living and the dead, such as the work of historian Thomas Laqueur (2015) and philosopher Hans Ruin (2018), I will analyse the current controversy surrounding the Dutch statue of Jan Pietersz.
