Title Feyenoord ‘Shitty’: waarom de Kuip zo ongekend veel emotie oproept Degree of recognition Local Media name/outlet Vers Beton Media type Other Country/Territory Netherlands Date 26/03/19 Description This article examines the emotional responses to plans for Feyenoord City, the proposed new stadium to replace Rotterdam's iconic De Kuip (Feyenoord Stadium). Drawing on theories of affect and collective memory, the author analyzes why the stadium evokes such strong emotions among supporters. Built in 1937, De Kuip functions as both a physical and emotional center for the club's identity, creating what supporters and opponents alike describe as a unique atmosphere. The article argues that Feyenoord's management should adopt approaches from heritage organizations rather than treating the stadium purely as a commercial asset. While the current plans attempt to preserve architectural characteristics of De Kuip and retain the old stadium as a "legacy" retail concept, many supporters feel excluded from the decision-making process. The author contends that supporters collectively embody the club's heritage through their memories and experiences, making their involvement essential to any successful transition. The article concludes that clubs with rich histories like Feyenoord cannot only look forward—they must continue to look backward to preserve their culture and identity.
