Personal profile
Research interests
Anne Brinkman (Amsterdam 1967) is a practitioner in (inter)national development and change, a lawyer and organisational scientist by training. Her work is shaped in practice in connection to people’s daily experiences, grounded in theory and informed by (innovative) empirical efforts.
Anne obtained her PhD degree at the ISS in The Hague. Her research examined the case of Libyan people engaging in dialogue and action, in and beyond community borders, to advance the rule of law and development. The efforts of these people and their bottom-up approach demonstrate the importance of asking development ethics questions in order for development interventions to be successful: who needs to be included, what ambitions matter, and which approaches are used?
Anne uses particpatory action (reserach) to capture the diversity of perspectives that can contribute to shaping transitions in (conflict-affected) societies.
Her main interests are human development (ethics), cooperation, and human capacity. In these domains, she develops, examines and implements interventions that contribute to sustainable development. She seeks to enable people to excel individually and allow different perspectives to feature in their collective actions. Her work is interdisciplinary, focused on bridging knowledge and practice, pushing frontiers in thought and action and connecting people and communities.
