Research interests

I am a physician–scientist, general practitioner, educator and entrepreneur working at the intersection of clinical reasoning, patient safety, artificial intelligence (AI), and medical education. My work is driven by a central question: how can we educate and support clinicians to remain competent, reflective and responsible professionals in a rapidly changing, AI-rich healthcare system?

I currently hold postdoctoral research and teaching positions at Erasmus MC, embedded within the Department of General Practice and the Institute of Medical Education Research Rotterdam (iMERR). I obtained my PhD in 2025 with a dissertation entitled “Learning from Diagnostic Errors and Malpractice Claims: Enhancing Clinical Reasoning Education in General Practitioner Training”. This work translated real-world diagnostic errors and malpractice claims into empirically tested educational interventions, providing evidence on how error-based cases can strengthen clinical reasoning without increasing anxiety when cognitive and emotional load are carefully managed.

My current research programme focuses on human–AI collaboration in clinical practice and medical education. I lead and contribute to funded projects examining AI-supported triage, digital and hybrid care, and AI-generated feedback for clinical reasoning education. A unifying theme across these projects is the “human factor”: understanding how AI reshapes professional judgement, responsibility, competencies and learning, and how education can proactively support reskilling rather than deskilling.

This line of work has been supported by several competitive fellowships and grants. I am a recipient of the Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI) Fellowship at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where I lead an educational innovation project on AI-generated, personalized feedback in clinical reasoning education. I also completed the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Fellowship (USA), which strengthened my leadership at the intersection of patient safety, quality improvement, education and innovation. In addition, I am co-applicant and work package leader on ZonMw-funded projects (2026–2028) focusing on the scaling up of digital and AI-supported triage in primary care and out-of-hours GP services, with specific responsibility for professional competencies, implementation and human–AI interaction.

Alongside my research, I am actively involved in medical education and faculty development. As a lecturer at Erasmus MC, I am responsible for educational innovation and professional development related to the didactic and substantive integration of AI in undergraduate medical education and postgraduate GP training. I develop and deliver education on clinical reasoning, diagnostic uncertainty, diagnostic errors, health law and (paediatric) dermatology, and regularly provide invited national and international workshops and conference teaching. My educational work is explicitly evidence-based and tightly connected to my research, ensuring continuous translation between scholarship, curriculum development and clinical practice.

I remain clinically active as a locum general practitioner, working one day per week in primary care. This ensures ongoing engagement with everyday diagnostic decision-making and the realities of clinical work, which directly inform my research and teaching.

In addition, I am the founder and CEO of a healthcare start-up developing AI-based patient flow management and triage software for general practice and out-of-hours GP services. This initiative received the National Healthcare Innovation Award (jury prize) in 2023 and serves as a real-world laboratory for studying AI implementation, professional responsibility and patient safety. Across all roles, I aim to connect research, education, clinical practice and innovation in ways that contribute to safer diagnosis, responsible AI use and sustainable healthcare systems.
