Dr. Janneke M. Schokkenbroek (PhD in Communicatiewetenschappen en Criminologische Wetenschappen) is universitair docent Gezondheidspsychologie bij de afdeling Psychology, Education and Child Studies (DPECS).

Haar werk richt zich op sociale gezondheid in het digitale tijdperk, met bijzondere aandacht voor de manier waarop digitale tools en platforms ervaringen in romantische relaties vormgeven in verschillende fasen - van (online) daten tot relatieonderhoud en breakups. In haar onderzoek verkent zij zowel de kansen als de risico’s die technologie met zich meebrengt voor ons sociale welzijn, en ontwikkelt zij inzichten die mensen ondersteunen bij het opbouwen en onderhouden van bevredigende intieme relaties in onze digitale samenleving. Zij combineert kwantitatieve en kwalitatieve onderzoeksmethoden (zoals surveys, experimenten, interviews en thema-analyses) om zowel brede patronen als diepgaande perspectieven in kaart te brengen.

Gedreven door de ambitie om onderzoek toegankelijk en maatschappelijk relevant te maken, deelt zij haar werk met een breed publiek. Ze is auteur van de Psychology Today-blog ‘Intimate Relationships in the Digital Era’ en vertaalde haar promotieonderzoek naar schadelijke technologiepraktijken in romantische relaties naar het populairwetenschappelijke boek ‘Appily Ever After: door het digitale doolhof van daten en relaties’. Daarnaast deelt zij haar expertise via interviews in diverse media, waaronder nieuwsartikelen, radioprogramma’s en podcasts.

Dr. Janneke M. Schokkenbroek (PhD in Communication Sciences and Criminological Sciences) is an assistant professor in Health Psychology at the Department of Psychology, Education and Child Studies.

Her work focuses on social health in the digital era, particularly how digital tools and platforms shape romantic relationship experiences across different stages - from (online) dating to relationship maintenance to breakups. Her research aims to understand the opportunities and risks that technology brings to our social well-being, and to develop insights that help individuals build and maintain fulfilling intimate relationships in our digital society. She combines quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., surveys, experiments, interviews, and content analyses) to capture broad patterns as well as in-depth perspectives.

Passionate about making research accessible and relevant beyond academia, she shares her work with broad audiences. She authors the Psychology Today blog 'Intimate Relationships in the Digital Era' and she distilled her PhD research on harmful technology practices in romantic relationships into a popular science book, 'Appily Ever After: door het digitale doolhof van daten en relaties'. She has also shared her expertise through interviews in a range of media outlets, including news articles, radio programs, and podcasts.
