Research interests
Katharina D. Martin is philosopher and artist based in Rotterdam and a visiting fellow at the Erasmus School of Philosophy. Her research comprises philosophy of nature, philosophy of technology, continental philosophy, and aesthetics, focusing on concepts such as expression, form, milieu, and body. Martin has given numerous talks, authored several book chapters, and published two books: a co-edited anthology on the problem of the body in Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault, (Innen – Aussen – Anders, Körper im Werk von Gilles Deleuze und Michel Foucault, transcript, 2017) and a monograph on technology as a problem of expression (Technik als Problem des Ausdrucks. Über die naturphilosophischen Implikationen technikphilosophischer Theorien, transcript, 2023).
Martin has a multidisciplinary background with studies in social pedagogy (Dipl. Münster, 2003), media art (BA Enschede, 2006), and fine arts (Dipl. Münster, 2013). After her studies she continued her research in the field of aesthetics and philosophy. Martin was an Associated Member at the Cluster of Excellence Image Knowledge Gestaltung at Humboldt University of Berlin (2014-2019) and taught image theory at AKI Enschede, ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem (2016-2020). In 2023 she obtained her doctorate (Dr. Phil., magna cum laude) at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig under Prof. Marc Rölli (HGB Leipzig) and Prof. Claudia Blümle (Humboldt University Berlin).
Furthermore, Katharina D. Martin is an experienced and internationally exhibited artist. She was Artist in Residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program ISCP New York (2012) and at the (Robert Wilson) Watermill Centre, NY (2009). Among others, her work has been shown at the National Gallery of Art in Vilniu, at MACRO Rome and the Torch Gallery Amsterdam. In 2019 she had a solo exhibition at Gallery Joey Ramone Rotterdam and in 2023 her video Stick was presented at the Bienalsur Biennial in Buenos Aires.
