Research project: The Collective Epistemology of Misinformation
Many conspiracy theories and other kinds of misinformation have widespread support, regardless of seeming insurmountable amounts of counterevidence. This phenomenon challenges the way we think about truth, evidence and justification. While most research in this area is centered on individual beliefs, this project focuses on groups. What does it mean for a group to believe something? When are such beliefs justified? How does collective epistemology help us make sense of conspiracy theories and other kinds of misinformation?
