Personal profile

Research interests

The quality and effectiveness of oncological reconstructive surgery depends on continued research and investment in surgical innovations. To this end, my overarching research goal is to ensure and improve the quality of patient care based on the principles of value-based healthcare. Thus, my clinical research integrates two research lines: 1) patient-centred research based on reported data from patients and healthcare providers; and 2) innovations in reconstructive surgery.

My main focus in research line 1 is clinical studies on the impact, safety, value, and effectiveness of reconstructive surgery following treatment for breast cancer. Clinical studies are also carried out in patients who have had reconstructive surgery after treatment for head & neck, and facial skin cancer.

Research line 2 focuses on innovations in reconstructive surgery, and includes robotics in surgery, 3D planning, augmented reality, and wireless sensors for free flap monitoring. This research is in line with the commitment of Erasmus MC to take a leading role in shaping the use of advanced technology in healthcare.
