His PhD research examines how post-war globalization affected the Dutch shipbuilding industry between 1945 and 1983, focusing on the development of global external conditions and on the subsequent local strategic responses by shipyards. In understanding the rise and fall of this particular industry, the project takes into account the broader maritime network and the role of government intervention. It connects to research on the development of maritime industries, the resilience of business systems towards globalization, and the effect of business-government relations.
The research is embedded within the Research Centre for Modern Maritime History (RCMMH) and is part of a larger project that studies the modern maritime history in the Netherlands (1850-2000). Mark Straver holds Master degrees in History, Finance and Financial Law (2015) from Erasmus University Rotterdam. His main research interests include business history, maritime history, economic history and financial history.
