Research interests

Martijn J. van den Assem is an associate professor at the Finance Group of the Department of Business Economics, the Erasmus School of Economics (ESE).

His research interests are broad, with a particular focus on themes from the fields of financial and behavioral economics. Examples are decision making under risk, initial public equity offerings, bargaining, and social behavior.

His research is mostly empirical, focused at individual choice, and based on non-standard data. He has served as a referee for many different high-quality scholarly journals, and is currently co-editing a special issue on empirical behavioral finance for the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization.

His article based on the TV game show Deal or No Deal was published in the esteemed American Economic Review and ranks among the most frequently downloaded articles of all times in the field of social sciences. He has also published in Experimental Economics and Management Science.

Professor van den Assem is currently the bachelor thesis coordinator and the internship coordinator for the ESE Finance Group, and a member of ESE's Exam Committee. From 2005 until 2011, he was a member of the Executive Board of the Finance Group.

As a lecturer, he is actively involved in his school’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. In 2011, he received a Top Lecturer Award from ESE.
