Rick Everts (1989) is a PhD candidate at the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture. Rick’s PhD research focuses on the role of live music ecologies in the careers of pop musicians. Its objective is to contribute to a ‘healthy’ live music ecology by investigating the ways the different actors can contribute to skill development and nourishment of aspiring musicians. His research is part of the NWO-funded project *Staging popular music: sustainable live music ecologies for artists, music venues and cities (POPLIVE),* which is conducted in collaboration with the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, the VNPF (Dutch Association of Music Venues and Festivals) and MOJO Concerts. Rick’s work is supervised by Prof. Dr. Susanne Janssen, Dr. Pauwke Berkers and Dr. Erik Hitters. Rick received a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Amsterdam (2012), followed by a research master’s degree in Social Sciences at the same university (2016) with a specialisation in the sociology of culture and the arts. In his thesis he explored the diffusion of house music and the establishment of national house fields. Previously Rick has worked as a lecturer in the Sociology Bachelor at the UvA, as a research assistant in various projects at the UvA and as a producer for Sonic Acts, a cultural organisation for music, visual arts, science and technology.
