Abstract

It is difficult to find discrete, probative and wide-ranging data about circular economy projects (funded and implemented) as there is no unified database at EU level. To date, available data are limited, incomplete, fragmented and spread across multiple sources in the EU and member states. We urge the creation of a unified database of all funded and implemented projects. Such a database would, for example, allow quantifying how much is invested in low- or high-value circular economy strategies. Data could also tell which materials, products and services have been involved. In any case, data must also allow comparability, interoperability between systems and integration with other harmonized data sets. Open Access data and good data infrastructure are strongly related to Open Science and transparency to which we as scientists and the EU are all committed to. Therefore, we suggest that the EU acts quickly and consultatively (i.e., involving experts, legislators, and future data users) in creating a unified database for the benefit of scholars, practitioners, decision-makers, stakeholders and concerned citizens at large, and not just in the EU.
