Abstract
This chapter introduces Servant Leadership Coaching (SLC), a specific form of executive coaching embedded in SL theory. Coaching is a human change and development activity based on a collaborative relationship between coach and client to achieve personal and professional developmental outcomes that the client values. Servant leadership development is described as a type of leadership development that is personal-development-oriented and not performance-based or skills-oriented. It requires transformational learning, which occurs at a deeper level of personality, beyond developing and acquiring a set of skills or behaviors that influence others and achieve performance goals and objectives. The foundational premise of putting other’s needs ahead of the leader’s gains and the ultimate purpose of being of service truly define a servant leader’s heart. This disposition makes it challenging for other forms of coaching to be suitable for SL development. Therefore, a specific coaching approach, the SLC approach, based on principles rooted in the philosophy of servant leadership theory, is conceptualized as a unique coaching practice with a tailored strategy suitable for developing servant leaders.
