A mass market for the visual arts: The golden age of Dutch painting during the seventeenth century

Research output: Chapter/Conference proceedingChapterAcademic

Abstract

Fueled by the immigration of artists from war-torn Flanders and the Dutch economic miracle, the seventeenth century witnessed the spectacular rise of a mass market for paintings in the newly formed Dutch Republic. This chapter examines how artists catered to the seemingly insatiable demand for genre scenes, land- and cityscapes, still-lives, and religious compositions featuring Protestant iconography.
