Abstract

In this chapter we present organisational integrity from an unusual perspective: that of the public regulator. As expected, a public regulator departs from her formal task of checking and enforcing compliance with regulatory requirements. However, as we will demonstrate, regulators are also looking for less traditional ways to contribute to public interest. In attempts to make their strategies more proactive in a world that is getting more and more complex, they experiment with assessing organisational integrity in different ways. In doing this, they are stretching their formal assignment to new boundaries. Surprisingly, the integrity of the regulatory agency itself becomes functional in this quest, and the regulator finds itself in a new relationship with the regulated organisation.
