Abstract
Business applications of space technologies are set to reshape competitive landscapes and contribute significantly to European economies. In this transformative process, space startups may play a crucial role. Given the substantial public and private investment in the development of European space startups, it becomes essential to understand why they are so important and what characteristics define them. Answering these questions allows scholars and practitioners to better comprehend how space is driving competitiveness by shaping a “new” space-enabled economy. This chapter delves into these issues by emphasizing the importance of adopting an innovation ecosystem perspective. We explore the role of technology convergence and examine how space affordances serve as engines for innovation and new venture creation in the emerging new space economy. Finally, we discuss initial evidence of European space startups’ dynamics and identify potential directions for future research regarding the challenges and opportunities presented by the space economy in Europe.
