Abstract

We compare the development of entrepreneurs and enterprises in two CMEs (the Netherlands and Germany) and two LMEs (the United States and Great Britain). According to the VoC approach, because of institutional complementarity, an increasing homogenization of enterprises will occur. We demonstrate that instead of homogenization a large variety of entrepreneurs and enterprises existed in both LMEs and CMEs during the twentieth century. The main explanation for this is the hybrid character of LMEs and CMEs. Because of their hybrid character, institutional complementarities remain weak. This allows for a great variety of entrepreneurs and enterprises.
