The data provided in the letter by Bhogal and colleagues echo our results. The excellent patient and graft survival rates after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in Birmingham with a liver graft from a donation after cardiac death (DCD) donor certainly are not inferior to the very good results after OLT with a liver from a donation after brain death (DBD) donor. These results were achieved while, in contrast to the Dutch cohort, a substantial proportion of donors were over 55 years old. Indeed, in the Dutch cohort donor age was not an independent predictor of 1-year graft survival. Therefore, we also now tend to accept DCD donors older than 55 years.

It will be important to learn about the donor and recipient selection criteria in Birmingham. [...]
