Abstract
Joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been a key foreign policy goal for Slovakia since independence. An enormous amount of political capital has been invested in this goal since the early 1990s. Relatedly, the Slovak armed forces underwent a fundamental transformation, which was however limited by the budgetary constraints and path dependencies created by decades of communist military planning. In this chapter, the author tracks defence planning in Slovakia since independence, focusing on which key military challenges were identified, what capabilities were chosen to address them (and why) and how the inclusion in NATO affected the definition of these key military challenges.
