Abstract
Summary The dermatologist is often the first person responsible for the diagnostic process of the still increasing population of skin cancer patients. Especially in patients with locally aggressive or high risk tumors radiologic imaging can be of additional value for appropriate staging or early detection of tumor progression and assists in determining the best strategy. In this article we focus on existing controversies on imaging in skin cancer and provide guidance on imaging modalities for assessing local invasion, locoregional metastasis and distant metastasis. However, except for patients with metastatic melanoma, the literature on radiological imaging is limited or mainly based on non-cutaneous head and neck tumors or small retrospective case-series. It is therefore wise to acknowledge imaging for skin tumors as an important gap in our dermatological knowledge.
