Abstract
We show that US media attention to disasters abroad is based on the number of fatalities than on the number of people in need, and that this effect carries over to disaster relief decisions by the US government. This finding suggest the possibility of a systematic misallocation of relief funds. We formulate propositions that help improve disaster relief decisions and aid allocation.
