Abstract

This was published as the 1990 annual report of the Academic Council on the United Nations System. Its purpose is to provide a review of major changes in the United Nations and the role of international organizations in world politics in the period under review (January 1, 1989 through April 30, 1990). The report addresses the impact of the events in Eastern Europe and the changing power relationships on the United Nations system. It also deals with the social and economic sectors of the United Nations and their relationships with the Bretton Woods institutions and provides an extensive review of the UN system at work, covering the work of ten UN organs and specialized agencies. The report identifies expanding roles for the United Nations system in the fields of peace-keeping, nation-making, election monitoring, economics, development and environmental preservation and submits proposals for strengthening and transforming the UN system in order to enable it to meet the needs of our time.
