Abstract
This entry addresses the common law origins of Law and Literature by contrasting it with civil law Law and Literature. It does so on the view that differences between legal systems and jurisdictions lead to, firstly, different approaches in both forms of research and valuations of research in the field, and, secondly, to problems of translation when implementing findings and methods from common law Law and Literature in civil law surroundings. One of Law and Literature’s current topics, legal narratology, serves to illustrate (dis)similarities and dichotomies.
