Abstract

This letter concerns our publication ‘Diversity in the pathway from medical student to specialist in the Netherlands: a retrospective cohort study’. In this study we created categories within the variable ‘migration background’. We discovered that the dataset included old (colonial) names of countries which no longer exist under that name. As a result, the people whose migration background (MB) was categorized as ‘Nederlands-Indië’ (the former Dutch name for Indonesia, until their independence) were placed in the “Other” category, while they should have been placed in the category of ‘Surinamese, Dutch Caribbean or Indonesian MB’.
Furthermore, people from territories in Europe which no longer exist (e.g. East Germany or Yugoslavia) were included in the ‘Other’ category instead of the European category.
This needs to be taken into consideration while interpreting the findings related to these groups.
