Abstract

McEwan's novel shows the dilemma involved with deciding on blood transfusion for minor Jehovah's witnesses. Discussion of this novel shows that the Best interest of the child principle might be deciding in case religion does not provide any exit. The novel also shows that on a deeper level the medical and the dogmatic religious discourse mirror each other in their focus on the body.
