Abstract

All currently available index-based depth of hypnosis monitors assume that a single index value, derived from a single algorithm, reflects the same level of unconciousness for all anesthetics. However, different anesthetics act on various molecular targerts and neural circuits in the brain to create different electroencephalographic signatures and states of altered arousal. Density Spectral array (DSA) facilitates the interpretation of the "raw" EEG by a three-dimensional representation of EEG signals.

This thesis described the different EEG patterns during general anesthesia or procedural sedation in pediatric patients and teenagers. The clinical applicability of DSA in various age groups and during the use of different anesthetics was outlined. DSA offers many advantages over the current index-based EEG monitors, and we consider it a promising technique that will give us more patient-centric information regarding hypnotic depth in children.
