Abstract
Based on an extensive literature review, the aim of this chapter is to contribute to the existing body of knowledge concerning charity through the theoretical lens of diaspora philanthropy. In the interest of a deeper understanding, the study is empirically positioned within the socio-geographical context of Morocco. The literature review is used to compare the cross-border charity-motives of national NGOs to those of diasporic cross-border philanthropists. This chapter further
elaborates the existence of a civil society in the Global South, like that of Morocco, along with its maintenance during the 20th and 21st centuries. By including both historical and contemporary sociological literature on a single country, this chapter lays a foundation upon which to build a deeper understanding of charity given by two different international philanthropic actors in the same national field. This chapter has three primary objectives: 1) to gather literature on charity existing through cross-border diasporic philanthropy; 2) to demonstrate the social relationships and form of charity that diasporic and bi-cultural groups have with their countries of origin; and 3) to lay a foundation for future research on the effects of charity connected by diaspora in the global civil field.
