N2 - During the last two decades-despite their academic tradition-university departments of classics have started to make use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in learning and research activities. Nevertheless, recent pedagogical studies on this issue have demonstrated that these new tendencies are not widely accepted by the administration and part of the faculty who do not recognize them as a "proper" field of knowledge. The aim of this paper is to present the new field of "Digital Classics" by describing the utility of ICT for the study of the ancient Greek language in Higher Education and by presenting a considerable number of technological applications and multimedia resources, created by several universities around the world. Finally, some innovative teaching and learning methods will be described in order to make clearer the academic activity that it is associated with this new discipline and to help the decision makers understand its idiosyncrasies and functions within the university classics departments.
