Abstract
Aim of the thesis:
1) To review the reciprocal role between potassium and the kidney using insights from tubulopathies and hypokalemic nephropathy (Chapter 2).
2) To review the role of dietary acid load in health and disease (Chapter 3).
3) To analyze the clinical characteristics, symptoms and long-term outcomes in Gitelman Syndrome (Chapter 4).
4) To analyze the effect of sodium chloride supplementation on plasma potassium, symptom burden and quality of life in Gitelman Syndrome (Chapter 5).
5) To analyze the urinary metabolic fingerprint of potassium chloride supplementation in chronic kidney disease (Chapter 6).
6) To analyze the electrolyte, blood pressure and acid-base effects of 5 different salts in patients with chronic kidney disease (Chapter 7).
