Abstract

This chapter discusses new developments in the detection, staging, and treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) worldwide over the past 15 years, as well as the differences between Eastern and Western approaches. With regards to clinical and pathological staging, both the TNM staging system developed by the International Union against Cancer (UICC) and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), as well as the Japanese classification system, developed by the Japanese Esophageal Society (JES), are utilized. Treatment approaches in clinical practice worldwide are  generally in line with the guidelines provided by these associations.
