Abstract
In this study it is argued that the conceptions of development in which macro sectoral and spatial categories overlap have unduly simplified the nature of development processes. Furthermore, they are increasingly difficult to sustain in the face of changes in the organization of state and of enterprise. A new perspective is put forward which has a double foundation. Firstly, economic behaviour and space are integrated at the micro level. Secondly, the territorial organization of the state is integrated in the analysis of the economic role of the state. Three case studies covering different aspects of economic and regional development of Colombia are presented to illustrate the theoretical propositions.
