Abstract
The alternative of a basic needs strategy is discussed in the light of the present economic crisis in Latin America. The book concludes that the recession hits Latin America's poorest the hardest. A basic needs approach is suggested as a reply to the current practice of adjustment policies and as a long-term solution to the basic needs problem. Contributions in the volume discuss research methodologies and policy experiences for the design of basic needs strategies in Latin America.
