Abstract

In this study, it was investigated which concepts regarding 'the good life' are used in mission statements of nursing homes providing care for demented patients. 117 mission statements were qualitatively analyzed on content. Also, mission statements developed specifically for demented residents were compared with mission statements for a general nursing home population. Six main concepts were found that are considered important for a good life:

1) autonomy & freedom,

2) individuality & lifestyle,

3) relationships & social networks,

4) warmth & safety & familiarity,

5) developing capacities & giving meaning to life and

6) subjective experience & feelings of well-being.

Most mission statements turned out to be highly eclectic in content. This eclecticism is understandable; still, a coherent view on the good life for demented residents should aim for a sound internal structure.
