Abstract
To the Editor:
Dr. Jereczek and colleagues discussed our finding that pretreatment transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is associated with a higher incidence of late urinary obstruction. Furthermore, they raised an interesting issue: TURP was also associated with worse tumor control in their data as well as in other studies. Several authors reported however no negative effect of a TURP on outcome in studies containing mainly low- or intermediate-risk patients, whereas Zagars et al. reported TURP as a prognostic factor for T3/T4 disease only.
