Abstract

The strategy of industrialization in Ecuador is analysed from the perspective of its 'macro-efficiency' of promoting growth, sectoral balance and employment and the perspective of its 'micro-efficiency' of supplying appropriate basic needs and remunerative employment. It concludes that the industrialization pattern in Ecuador has promoted unequal development, but that reform policies (changing income and asset distribution) can reconcile growth, employment and basic needs objectives in the medium term.
