Abstract

The title of this Liber Amicorum, ‘By the end of the day’, refers to one of Michael
Faure’s frequently used expressions. At many conferences and seminars, Michael is
asked to recap all of the presentations and discussions of that day. In those closing
speeches, which are always brilliant, Michael’s summaries of the most essential
insights are often preceded by the words ‘by the end of the day…’ He also uses these
words when discussing with PhD researchers the contents of their next chapter,
and when presenting conclusions of his own research. Finding out exactly what
is the common thread in the plethora of presentations, literature, and opinions,
is one of Michael’s many outstanding qualities. Other virtues of Michael include,
for example, writing a perfectly formulated academic paper (including literature
references) using only a Dictaphone (even while travelling); motivating everyone
around him with his personal approach of research supervision and collaboration;
and knowing everything there is to know about good wine and good food.1
