Abstract

The rates of live kidney donation (LKD) are increasing worldwide and surgical techniques in live donor nephrectomy (LDN) are evolving in response to this demand. This chapter describes current techniques in this field and highlights their respective safety profiles. Particular attention is drawn to geographical variations and the reasons underpinning such patterns. Given the vast array of techniques, training in LDN is becoming ever complex and this chapter aims to shed light on particular challenges encountered in this area. Finally, we explore the surgical risks of the different types of operation and how they may affect donor recovery. Special attention is attributed to optimising patient experiences through the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programme.
