Abstract
The Dutch hospital Mercy Medical Centre has committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive environment by signing a Declaration of Intent on diversity and inclusion (D&I), recognizing its ethical and business importance. Despite this commitment, however, Mercy faces uncertainty in addressing various D&I-related challenges. These include staffing teams with diverse members, ensuring all employees feel recognized and valued, addressing promotion disparities, and helping employees understand the benefits of D&I initiatives. These challenges also have implications for patient care, affecting the treatment of patients from diverse backgrounds and their perceptions of the care they receive from the hospital. Mercy must devise a clear strategy to tackle these challenges effectively and determine which HR policies and tools will best advance the hospital's D&I strategy, positively impacting both the workforce and patient care.
