Abstract

This study argues that the role of money (and more specifically, of monetary imbalances) in a transition to socialism cannot merely be analysed in terms of its distributional effects on various sectors of the economy and on the balance between consumption and accumulation, but also, and importantly, in terms of its effects on the process of transformation of production relations. The argument is developed within a context of an analysis of the political economy of planning within the post-independence experience of Mozambique.
