OCCUPYING BROKERAGE POSITION THAT ENDANGERS PERFORMANCE? THE PERSPECTIVE OF INTERPRETIVE AGENCY

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperAcademic

Abstract

We revise the rational model of agency in network research that sees people as purposive agents who actively seek for network-related advantage, and introduce an “interpretive agency” perspective that stresses on people's subjective experience and interpretation of unfolding social situations. We see the interpretive side of agency as critical for explaining why people form brokerage that detriments performance and capture it in two information processing orientations - sensory processing sensitivity and relational schema. We demonstrate that the interpretation tuned by innate sensitivity and relational schema explains the formation of brokerage - regardless of the actual, even harmful impact of brokerage.
