Abstract
The official proceedings of Pacem in Maribus XVIII, held in Rotterdam in 1990, the volume contains more than 30 papers by internationally recognized experts on the past, present and future role of ports in an emerging global transport system and the contribution of ports to social and economic development. Topics covered include trends in the global transport system, technological developments, ports and human resources, marine pollution and the environment, and port problems and planning in developing countries. The implications for future port policies and planning are reviewed in detail, with special attention given to the problems, priorities and assistance needs of developing regions and countries. The volume contains 40 recommendations on future port development policies and planning.
