Manuel Barcia’s extraordinary book The Yellow Demon of Fever: Fighting Disease in the Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Slave Trade is one of the first major studies on medical culture and thetransatlantic slave trade in the post-1807 period. When the British government outlawed thetransatlantic slave trade in 1807, the British Royal Navy began patrolling the high seas,looking for slave ships that were still transporting African captives to the Americas.
