Abstract

This contribution addresses the question whether the Intranet of a large hospital in the Netherlands, which was designed in a participatory way, supports and encourages the sharing of organizational information among its employees. This question was addressed through the development of a typology of information categories available on the Intranet. It was assumed that the availability of a broad range of information is a prior condition for 'information participation '. The results show that the hospital's Intranet more or less meets this condition. In addition, we found that the number of visits per department (page views) is not linked to the number of pages belonging to each department (Intranet presence). Tlie results suggest that the differences in types of information might be of importance here. Further study should explain these differences between 'Intranet presence ' and use.
