Abstract
This collection of articles, dedicated to Jan Drewnowski, deals with social indicators and their relevance for social planning. It provides an overview of research on social indicators and is specifically concerned with problems and approaches to measurement and with problems in social development. Issues discussed in the various contributions include the problem of definition, the dichotomy between objective and subjective indicators, social and economic indicators, the use of quantitative information and the role of the state.
