Abstract
The book is an introduction to a broad range of materials: metals, plastics, ceramics and biomaterials. Basic knowledge and relevant information is presented for designers and engineers concerning the design and manufacture of new products or the improvement of existing ones. Also, modern developments and future trends are treated, in particular in the field of functional polymers and materials of biological origin. Throughout the book the importance of the interaction between structure, properties, processing and manufacture is emphasized. This gives the designer the tools for an integrated product development. Of course, the designer needs standards and therefore the book has an Annex to make her/him familiar with this topic.
