Abstract
This study deals with the historical development of the plantation sector and the implications this holds for plantation labour. It analyses the product market, the structure of ownership and management and how these have changed over the period 1934-1984. At the same time, it views the different labour policies that have evolved during various phases within the given time frame as well as the nature and structure of the labour force. The thesis also includes an analysis of labour control at the micro-level as it is expressed through the labour process on the estate and the returns that the workers get for their work on the plantations.
